After graduating from secondary school, Irina E. Kostina was accepted to the medical school of the 4th Main Directorate of the USSR Ministry of Health, from which she graduated with honors. After graduation, she worked as an operating nurse. In 1991 she was accepted to the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute named after N.A. Semashko. From 1998 to 2003 she completed her clinical residency training and postgraduate studies in radiology at the National Medical Research Center for Hematology. Since 2003, she has worked as a radiologist of the department. In 2009 she defended her thesis for the degree Candidate of Medical Sciences on the topic, "HRCT in the Diagnosis of Lung Damage at the Stages of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Patients with Hematopoietic Malignancies," under the guidance of Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, V.G. Savchenko, and Doctor of Medical Sciences, L.N. Gotman. In 2012 she became the head of the Department of Radiology and Computed Tomography (Department of Radiology since 2022).
