Anatoly G. Fedotenkov (1919-1991), transfusiologist, cryobiologist, health care organizer, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1967), Professor (1981), Honored Scientist of the RSFSR. Anatoly Fedotenkov was born in the village of Karpovo, Vyazemsky district, Smolensk province to the family of an accountant. In 1943 he graduated from the 1st Moscow Medical Institute.
Fedotenkov joined the efforts of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) in 1943 As a surgeon of the shock brigade on the Western Front, he led the mobile army blood transfusion stations on the Western Belorussian Front. From 1945 until the end of his life, Fedotenkov held many positions at the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion: Doctor of the Department of Procurement and Blood Transfusion, Senior Researcher of the Surgical Department, Head of the Research Laboratory for Tissue and Bone Marrow Preservation (1958 - 1974), Head of the Department of Preservation of Organs and Hematopoietic Tissues (1974-1981), Director (1981-1987), Head of the Laboratory for Preservation and Fractionation of Bone Marrow (since 1987). He was awarded the State Prize in 1978 and the A.A. Bogomolets Award in 1983
Fedotenkov was one of the first in the USSR to develop a new scientific direction - the problems of tissue preservation (1947). He conducted fundamental, theoretical and experimental research in the field of cryobiology of hematopoietic tissues and organs and developed effective methods for long-term storage of bone marrow in deep cold conditions.
