The patient was admitted to the NMRC for Hematology about two weeks ago with a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia. The debut of acute leukemia occurred during pregnancy at about 30 weeks. During a routine examination by an obstetrician-gynecologist at her place of residence, a decrease in blood counts was revealed. The doctors reacted in a timely manner and performed a bone marrow puncture where tumor cells were detected. The patient was immediately referred to the NMRC for Hematology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, where extensive experience in managing pregnant women with acute leukemia has been accumulated.
"The patient was admitted to us in relatively stable condition. Acute promyelocytic leukemia can manifest with immediately life-threatening symptoms: bleeding, infectious complications. In this patient, the disease proceeded relatively well. We decided to let her carry the pregnancy from 32 weeks to a more mature term. The diagnosis was beyond doubt. We started chemotherapy and observed the patient together with obstetricians and gynecologists. The fetal condition was well monitored. We conducted ultrasound, CTG, monitored the heartbeat and activity of the baby. In general, everything went well. Everything with the child was fine. We are always prepared for labor to start suddenly. On all previous days the mother's condition was stable, but this morning the first harbingers of childbirth began, which increased one after another. A team of neonatologists, obstetricians and gynecologists was urgently assembled, and a cesarean section was performed. In the coming days, the patient will be monitored in the intensive care unit,” said hematologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Galina Isinova.
The boy was born weighing 1 kg 900 g. The baby was transferred to neonatologists in the neonatal intensive care unit in one of Moscow’s hospitals. The mother will continue treatment at the NMRC for Hematology.
