The department functions as part of the Division of Transfusiology.
The history of the department originates from the Laboratory of Bacteriology and Prevention of Viral Hepatitis and AIDS (more details).
The department was transformed into its present form in 2022.
The main duty of the department is to ensure the viral safety transfusions (blood and its components); the development and implementation of the latest approaches, methods and technologies for testing for markers of viral infections; the study of mono- and combined viral infections in patients with secondary immunodeficiency (patients with diseases of the blood system) against the background of the use of standard and new types of therapy.
Currently, the department:
- examines donors for infectious markers
- controls procurement conditions and sterility of donor blood components
- examines the patients of the NMRC for Hematology for markers of infections with parenteral transmission, viruses of the herpes group, pathogens of respiratory infections
- ensures a minimum level of risk of transfusion transmission of viral infections
