
The head of the department is hematologist Anahit L. Melikyan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, doctor of the highest category.
The department functions as part of the Division of Diagnostics and Treatment of Hematological Diseases.
The Polyclinic Department of the NMRC for Hematology has been operating since 1966, specialized as an outpatient center for hematological patients. The first head of the department was Prof. G.V. Osechinskaya. Since 1978, for 33 years, the Scientific Polyclinic Department was headed by prof. L. G. Kovaleva. During this period of time, the department, along with advisory medical and diagnostic activities, began to conduct scientific research in the field of diagnosis and treatment of chronic leukemia, anemia and hemorrhagic diathesis. Issues of medical and social adaptation and labor rehabilitation of patients were also studied. Since 2011, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Anahit L. Melikyan.
The department’s primary area of research is the study of pathogenesis, differential diagnosis and development of protocols for the treatment of patients with Ph-negative myeloproliferative neoplasia, primary immune thrombocytopenia and atypical lymphoproliferations, in particular, Castleman's disease. The employees of the department have developed national clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Ph-negative myeloproliferative diseases (MPD), for the diagnosis and treatment of primary immune thrombocytopenia, and for the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. Specialists of department are actively involved in the development of programs for molecular and morphohistochemical diagnostics, targeted therapy for Ph-negative MPDs, mastocytosis and primary immune thrombocytopenia.
The main objectives of the department's clinical activities are:
- consultations and examination of patients of the NMRC for Hematology
- conducting an additional examination in order to clarify the diagnosis;
- prescription of treatment or its correction, monitoring of ongoing therapy, recommendation of ways to optimize therapy;
- issuance of medical reports based on the results of the examination and recommendations for further management.

The Department for the Standardization of Treatment Methods also trains hematologists in clinical residency and postgraduate studies. During its existence, 3 Doctoral and 26 Candidate dissertations have been defended and more than 500 scientific papers have been published. The department has trained many highly qualified hematologists who are now working in different regions of the Russian Federation, CIS countries, Korea, Vietnam, Bulgaria, and Lebanon.
