The head of the department is hematologist — Larisa A. Kuzmina, Candidate of Medical Sciences.
The Hematology Clinic of the Institute of Blood Transfusion was established in 1927 on the initiative of professors M.P. Konchalovsky and H.H. Vlados.
From 1969-1988 the head of the Hematology Clinic was the Honored Worker of Science of the RSFSR, a participant in the Second World War, Professor F.E. Feinstein. Under his leadership, work continued on the study of leukemia, lymphomas, aplastic anemia, and hemolytic anemia; treatment protocols were improved for these diseases; programs were developed for the treatment of leukemia, aplastic anemia, including bone marrow transplantation. F.E. Feinshtein is one of the authors of the monographs “Diseases of the Blood System” (1980, 1987), “Hematopoietic Depression” (1987).
In 1972, the first 8-bed transplant unit was opened in the clinic, where under the guidance of L.S. Lyubimova, from 1972-74, the first studies were conducted on the treatment of patients with aplastic anemia with intravenous administration of allogeneic bone marrow using anti- lymphocytic globulin. In 1977 L.S. Lyubimova and L.P. Mendeleeva performed the first transplantation of allogeneic bone marrow in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia with conditioning with high doses of cyclophosphane.
From 1988 to 2011, the division was headed by Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Prof. V.G. Savchenko, and from 2011 to 2021 – Dr. Sci. (Med.), E. N. Parovichnikova. During this time, more than 1,300 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations were performed in the department.
The department was opened in April 1989 Currently, the department performs more than 120 allogeneic transplants per year in patients with various forms of hemoblastosis, mainly with acute leukemia, including from unrelated, partially compatible, haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell donors. In February 2014, the department performed the first transplant from an unrelated donor from Russia.
Since that moment, the staff of the department have been working tirelessly to create a Register of unrelated donors in the Russian Federation and participate in the creation of regulations to improve legal mandates in this area.
The main scientific tasks of the department — introduction of various modes of pretransplantation conditioning, as well as immunosuppression schemes after bone marrow transplantation, provision of a modern level of management of patients in conditions of deep and prolonged agranulocytosis and immunosuppression, prediction of graft failure, development of methods of its therapy, treatment of hemorrhagic syndrome and toxic complications in the posttransplantation period, development of new methods of treatment and prevention of acute and chronic graft reaction, as well as therapy of recurrent hemoblastosis after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The staff of the department also work in various scientific laboratories of the NMRC for Hematology, conducting fundamental research. Throughout the year about 20-30 publications on the topics of scientific and clinical works are published. Every year 1-2 dissertations are submitted for defense.
The staff of the department participate in all conferences “Leukemias and Lymphomas. Therapy and Basic Research,” conducted by the NMRC for Hematology, take part in annual international and domestic conferences on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and are organizers/experts and participants of Russian scientific conferences on hematology and bone marrow transplantation.
The staff of the department regularly hold patient schools, which are necessary for improving treatment results and the quality of life of those patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
